Some argue that Lenin and Stalin were the greatest Russians to live on the face of the earth…others say that Mikhail Gobachev might be the greatest Russian…some will even put Vladimir Putin in the list. They may all be right. However, I daresay that Peter the Great is the father of Modern Russia – and this might be controversial.

Under Peter the Great, forced labor was institutionalized. He forced the Russian Soldiers, Ottoman and Swedish Prisoners of war and Finnish and Estonian laborers to build Russia’s greatest city – St Petersburg. It is under him that a backwater, coastal, inhospitable area was changed into a great symbol of Russian civilization. Palaces, churches, convents, 2-storey townhouses etc. made up the urban design. In 20 short years under the direction of Frenchman Alexandre Leblond, the Great City came into being.

Gradually, an intricate network of canals, quays, and streets came up. Under Peter the Great successors such as Anna Ivanovna, Elisabeth Petrovna and Catherine II the Great, the city took on its present day splendor. Foreign architects such as Rinaldi, Camron, Rastrelli and Vallin de la Mothe tried to outdo each other in designing great palaces and convents. Noteworthy is the princely residences such as Pavlovsk, Lomonosov, Tsarkoie etc.

There are so many parks and theaters that they cannot be listed in one blog. The city of St Petersburg is Russia’s greatest heritage to the world. During the summer, a lot of Russians grace the city’s active festivities. You are well advised to try and sample some Russian hospitality in this great city.
